Judging Categories: Primary and Secondary Schools

Judging Criteria:
    • Content (30%): To what degree is the website appealing to a worldwide audience?
    • Presentation (30%): How well is the information presented? How well does it use the Web medium?
    • Collaboration (40%): How fully did the students participate in the project? How well did they work together to create their website?

Judging Process: All website entries completed and posted by February 27 will be evaluated in the following process.

Preliminary Judging

A Selection Committee and the GVC Project Manager will select a total of 12 finalists in the Primary School and Secondary School categories using the criteria outlined above.

Final Judging

For two weeks after that, the Global Virtual Classroom judges, a panel of Internet-savvy individuals, will evaluate the 12 Websites individually and determine the winning teams (Grand Prize, Second Prize, Third Prize, Runners-Up, and Special Merit) using the same criteria as the Preliminary Judging.

  • Earl Gee

Earl Gee is Partner, with Fani Chung, of Gee + Chung Design, an award-winning multi-disciplinary design firm creating identity and branding programs, marketing collateral, packaging, exhibits and websites for clients including Apple Computer, the Federal Reserve Bank, IBM, Lucasfilm, Ltd., and Sony Electronics. The firm’s work has received numerous design awards and is included in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution. He received his BFA in graphic design with distinction from Art Center College of Design.

  • Dr. Gary Godfrey

Gary Godfrey is a Research Physicist at the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC). Dr. Godfrey has been engaged in experimental elementary particle research at SLAC since 1976. Presently, he is working on the Gamma Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), a satellite to be launched in 2006 to measure high energy gamma rays from astrophysical sources such as black holes, dark matter, and active galactic nuclei. SLAC was home in 1991 to the first World Wide Web site in the US.

  • Alan Giles

Alan Giles serves as CEO, HMV Group plc. HMV Group operates over 500 retail stores trading as HMV, the world’s largest music and video retailer, and Waterstone’s, the largest bookseller in the UK. Alan was appointed CEO in May 1999, having been Managing Director of Waterstone’s since 1993. After graduating from Oxford University he spent seven years in buying and marketing with Boots, Britain’s largest drugstore chain, before joining W H Smith (a bookseller, newsagent and stationer) in 1982. He took a masters degree at Stanford Business School in 1988 before returning to the UK as Operations and Development Director of the DIY chain Do It All. He is a non-executive director of Somerfield plc, Britain’s fifth largest food retailer.

  • Carol Knauff

Carol C. Knauff is a retired Vice President from AT&T where she spent 29 years leading organizations to market place and financial success. She represented AT&T in a number of national organizations. These were: U.S.O., Council for Better Business Bureaus, and National Council of LaRaza. She is an elected member of The Pennsylvania State University Alumni Council, and was named Outstanding Engineering Alumni in 1995 and Alumni Fellow in 1998 by Penn State. She also received the Pinnacle Award in 2002 from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Carol received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Penn State in 1969, a Masters in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri-Rolla and an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson. She currently resides in Mendham, NJ with her husband Jeff and their two daughters, Kathleen, 22 and Christine, 17. Carol is active in her community and volunteers many hours to the high school.

  • Dr. Ram Matta

Dr. Matta has 30 years experience with GE and high tech industry as an executive and general manager. He has designed and developed jet engines, gas turbines, power plants and been responsible for digitization of engineering processes. Dr. Matta took early retirement from GE to spend time with his family and to indulge his passion for teaching. He is an adjunct professor and consultant in Austin, TX. Dr. Matta has a BTech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Delhi, a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, and a Masters in Business from Stanford University.

  • JoAnn Patrick-Ezzell

JoAnn Patrick-Ezzell is Chairman of the Give Something Back International Foundation, the sponsor of the Global Virtual Classroom Program. She also serves as President & CEO of Synergistic Systems, a global management consulting firm. She has over 25 years of business experience in the telecommunications industry and served as President & CEO, ATT Asia/Pacific in Hong Kong. JoAnn graduated from Bucknell University in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. A Sloan Fellow, she received a master’s degree from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business in 1988. She and her husband, Andy Ezzell reside in Sarasota, Florida.

  • Joseph Timko

Joseph Timko had a 42 year career with AT&T Bell Laboratories. Among the major R&D project responsibilities were the following; missile guidance systems; software systems for telcos; telephones, modems and PBX products; and network system engineering. He retired from AT&T as Vice President of the network and systems AT&T Architecture Area. He has a BS in EE from Rutgers and a MS in EE from Yale University. He is a senior member of IEEE and was elected to various honorary societies. During the course of his career he taught software and engineering courses in corporate education programs. Recently as part of a church tutoring program he tutored high school and college students in algebra and calculus.


Judging Results: Grand Prize, Second Prize, Third Prize, Runners-Up, and Special Merit winners will be annouced on March 31.
